FOOTY KICKS IN FOR RED SHIELD
GLENORCHY Mayor Bec Thomas is urging her community to get behind the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal to ensure no one goes hungry and people receive the services they need.
Captain Jeff Milkins, from the Salvation Army Corps, said the Glenorchy community had always rallied together for the appeal – now in its 56th year – and help was needed “more than ever”.
“It has been a challenging year for many and the pressure on our services continues to mount,” Mr Milkins said.
“We need the help of community members more than ever as we continue to support those who have felt the devastating impacts of the past couple of years.
“Last year, because of Glenorchy’s generous support during the Red Shield Appeal, we were able to help people experiencing hardship and injustice through a number of initiatives.
“One example is our community meals program, serving lunch to vulnerable members of our local community.”
Ms Thomas, the appeal’s area chair, is pleased that for the first time the Claremont Football Club will host a “Red Saturday” fundraiser at its three games at Abbotsfield Park on May 14, including a luncheon and silent auction.
“Together, we can reach our goal of raising $30,000 to ensure no one in our municipality of Glenorchy goes hungry and that everyone is supported to access the services they need – whether it be counselling, social support, financial aid or food relief,” she said.
“I guarantee that every single dollar raised goes back into our Glenorchy community.”
Mr Milkins welcomed the new partnership with Claremont, which has received special permission from the SFL for the senior team to wear red socks for the game to help raise awareness of the appeal.
President Dennis Bird said the footy club was an integral part of the northern suburbs and was excited to be a part of the appeal.
“We pride ourselves as being a club that not only offer opportunities for our young men and women, but also a club that supports those vulnerable and struggling members of our community,” Mr Bird said.
