Cavaliers dole out drubbing

Cripps no match for premiers

- FRANCES REID

F45 CAVALIERS have ruthlessly taken down Cripps Waratah in Saturday’s showstopping match at the Silverdome in Launceston.

Saturday’s round eight matches marked the TNL’s Indigenous round, where players don specially designed bibs and other uniform to recognise the traditional custodians of the land, and bring focus to the cultural legacy left by past players and officials who have been trailblazers in the sport.

Last year’s premiers and the current second-placed squad Cavs led from the start of the match, finishing the first quarter 18-11.

Their strong feeding and movement around the circle allowed the team to evade Cripps’ formidable defence and shape the path of the match.

Cavs coaching squad member Dannie Carstens praised the quality of the match, citing the creativity throughout the attacking end.

“The match was a true standout for the year in terms of how we want to play as an attacking unit,” Carstens said. “We really executed the game plan implemented at training this week.

“A focus was opening up our vision and drawing the defenders.”

Despite their best efforts, the Cripps side was unable to shake the momentum of their opposition.

And Cavs increased their lead each quarter, eventually taking out the match 57-33 after only allowing Cripps two goals in the final quarter.

In other Saturday games, Devon defeated Arrows 55-49 in Ulverstone; and Hawks took out Kingston 67-43 at the Silverdome.

To finish off this weekend’s northern double-header, Cavs continued their winning streak by taking out Arrows 59-49 on Sunday.

Cripps defeated Devon in a nailbiting finish, taking out the match 48-46.

And Hawks triumphed over Karana, 89-24.
