BUMPER SECOND HALF SEALS DEVILS’ VICTORY

- JARROD LAWLER jarrod.lawler@news.com.au

THE Tassie Devils continued their hot start to the Boys NAB League season on Sunday with a monster third quarter setting up a five-goal win in a wet and windy affair against the Western Jets at Windsor Park.

After having their early 30 point lead reeled in to have the scores tied at the half the Devils kicked back into gear in a dominant third term to set up the 11.17 (83) to 8.6. (54) victory.

With scores tied entering the second half the Devils put on the after burners in a monster six-goal to none blitz to race out to a 45-point lead at the final change.

While the Jets fought back in the final term the damage was already done as the Devils held on to win by 29 points in another solid outing.

Lachie Cowan was again a standout in the win for the Devils with the athletic rebounding defender showing once more why he’s touted as the state’s best chance in this year’s AFL National Draft with another starring performance off half back.

The Devils have now won four of their first five games in a blistering start to the season to sit comfortably inside the top eight.

Devils coach Jeromey Webberly said it was pleasing to continue the team’s hot start to the season, especially in the difficult conditions.

“It was typical Tasmanian wet-weather footy and it was pleasing to come away with another good win in those conditions,” he said.

“We had the breeze in the first quarter and hit the scoreboard really well and then I think in the second quarter they beat us around the contest a bit but after half time we controlled the game really well and it was a good performance from the boys.”

Webberley was also full of praise for Cowan who did his draft chances no harm with another big game.

“He just carried on from where he was before the bye,” he said. “He sets up so well and intercepts and he runs to receive really well and he’s so damaging with ball in hand.

“His kicking and his penetration puts teams under so much pressure and he kicked another nice running goal today and to be honest he couldn’t have done much more so far this season after being touted last year.”

The Devils will look to continue their hot on Sunday when they face Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.
