Targa backs crash probe
TARGA has promised full cooperation with Motorsport Australia while it investigates the fatal crash of a driver in April.
The death of competitor Tony Seymour will be investigated by Motorsport Australia’s Targa Review Panel, which will also make recommendations on the fate of future events.
In the meantime, Motorsport Australia has suspended permits for all Targa-style tarmac events while investigations continue.
Targa Australia chief executive Mark Perry said it would co-operate fully with the review panel to ensure the future of its three events – Targa Tasmania, Targa High Country and Targa Great Barrier Reef.
“The loss of Tony at Targa this year was a tragedy and our heartfelt condolences go to his family and friends who continue to feel his loss,” Mr Perry said.
“This is a time for further reflection and we will work with Motorsport Australia to ensure our sport has a bright future.
“This was the 30th running of Targa Tasmania and it has such a special place in our state and has led to the successful creation of events in Queensland and Victoria.”
Motorsport Australia chief executive Eugene Arocca said the board was left with little choice given the circumstances.
“While many competitors acknowledge that motorsport is dangerous, we cannot accept that death is an outcome of competition, as has been suggested to us,” Mr Arocca said.
“As the peak governing body for four-wheeled motorsport in this country, Motorsport Australia must do everything it can to prevent these tragic incidents and this will often mean having to make difficult decisions for the safety and sustainability of our sport.
“We have spoken to key event organisers and informed them of this decision and, while they are understandably disappointed, we will continue to liaise with them as this process continues.”
He said it was still too early to determine the cause of the crash that killed Mr Seymour, but investigations were continuing.
Targa West in Western Australia and the Adelaide Rally are also subject to the Motorsport Australia suspension.
Motorsport Australia is allowing touring events to continue as normal, provided they undertake a targeted risk assessment and follow all road rules.
