Billy Graham’s grandson continues to preach gospel message

- ALEX TREACY

ONE of the biggest names in world Christianity is set to headline a massive, free three-day event in northern Tasmania expected to be attended by up to 10,000 people.

Will Graham, grandson of preacher Billy Graham, also know as “America’s Pastor”, will host three sessions at Launceston’s Silverdome at the weekend as part of the Tasmania Celebration event.

Legana Christian Church pastor Andrew Corbett, co-chair of the event’s organising committee, said plans had been afoot to host Mr Graham in Tasmania for three years. “The Graham family would be among America’s most widely known people, up there alongside the Kennedys,” Mr Corbett said.

“Billy Graham (who died in 2018) was one of the most influential people of the 20th century.

“Will was particularly close to his grandfather and has been really tutored and mentored by him.”

Mr Corbett said Mr Graham’s message was simultaneously “modern” and “2000 years old, in a sense”.

“The theme for (Mr Graham’s addresses) is ‘hope’,” he said.

“Through Covid-19, things like suicide and people’s mental health went down the toilet.

“But hope is a reason you have for believing your future is going to be better and brighter.”

Mr Corbett said the weekend’s events, which run from 4–9pm Friday, 10am–1pm and 7–9pm Saturday, and 6–8pm Sunday, will feature music (headlined by top US gospel act The Afters), children’s activities like laser tag, food, and the aforementioned nightly addresses by Mr Graham, where attendees will be invited to receive prayers from the pastor.

All sessions in the Tasmania Celebration are free to attend and require no RSVP.
