Accused killer a neighbour from hell

- DUNCAN EVANS

A CATTLE farmer who once lived next door to alleged triple murderer Darryl Young has revealed he, too, had “nothing but problems” with his former neighbour.

Robert Kohler bought Sutherland Station at Bogie, west of Bowen, now owned by the Schwarz family, in 2011 and said Young moved into nextdoor Shannonvale in 2012.

“From the time he got there, we had problems,” Mr Kohler said. “There was nothing but problems.”

Young is charged with the shooting murders of Mervyn Schwarz, 71, his wife Maree, 59, and her son, Graham Tighe, 35, on August 4 after the family met at their boundary to discuss ongoing property issues.

He is charged with the attempted murder of Maree’s other son, Ross Tighe, allegedly forced to run and hide in bushes with a gunshot wound to his stomach after seeing his family gunned down.

Young appeared at Proserpine Court via videolink on Monday, when the case was adjourned to Bowen Magistrates Court later this year.

On Mr Kohler’s account, Young engaged in acts of sabotage that stretched on for years, including interfering with Mr Kohler’s own cattle, though, he added, this had never been proven in court.

“Every time I put a complaint in to the stock squad, nothing got done,” he said.

He also said Young interfered with his sale of the property. Mr Kohler sold Sutherland Station in 2018 to another buyer, who in turn sold to the Schwarz family.

“What he (Young) was doing was creating havoc up there,” he said.

“They kept letting their cattle into my place, so that that would give them a reason to go in there. And then because I would not let them go in there to get their cattle, they put a demand muster on me.”
