DEVILS DUO EARNS SPOT AT AFL COMBINE

- RYAN ROSENDALE

TASMANIA Devils pair Tom McCallum and Lachlan Cowan are firmly on the mind of AFL recruiters with both boys invited to the 2022 NAB AFL Draft Combine in October.

After stellar seasons in the NAB League competition and representing the Allies, McCallum and Cowan will be among 67 players taking part in club interviews, medical screenings and physical testing across the combine’s two-days at Marvel Stadium.

The pair have enjoyed outstanding seasons in the NAB League – with Cowan recently named as a top 20 draft prospect after averaging 27.4 disposals, five marks and 8.1 rebound 50s across his ten games while McCallum’s form has clearly also caught recruiters eyes. The Clarence product, has averaged 15.4 disposals and 5.7 marks across his eleven games and produced a 27 disposal, 10 mark performance against the Northern Territory in round five.

All AFL clubs submitted a list of their preferred players to attend the combine and all those invited had to receive nominations from at least three clubs

Fellow Devils are expected to be in the eyes of recruiters with more players to be added to the national combine list and state-based combines also taking place during October.

The invites of McCallum and Cowan to the national combine is another highlight in what has been a terrific season for both the girls’ and boys’ programs under new head coach Jeromey Webberley.

With a bye this weekend, the Devils finished their home and away season in historic fashion on Saturday with a 34point win over the Northern Knights taking them to 10-3 and ensuring the highest ever finish for a Tasmanian boys team in the under-18 competition.

The second-placed Devils could mathematically finish third following the completion of the final round this weekend but are guaranteed the first week of the finals off given they can’t fall lower than third.
