- PETER KIRBY

ROUNDS 3 and 4 of Bowls Tasmania’s Senior (over 60s) Men’s and Women’s State Wide Challenge were played at the North Launceston Bowls Club on Tuesday.

South’s Senior Women defeated both of the northern sides. In the morning round the South had an all-rinks win over North’s B side, 71-37. Jeanette Lane’s rink of Denise Tanner, Trudy Davis and Peri Buckley contributed with a 19 shot margin, 28-9. Lyn Triffitt and her team of Adrienne Calnan, Di peck and Jennie Suttie were eight shot victors, 21-13, and Rosie Geeves, supported by Kerry Lane, Janet Rutherford and Lyn Page won by seven shots, 22-15.

The afternoon round was a much-anticipated rematch with North’s A side which resulted in a 10 shot, two rink victory, 50-40. Lyn Triffitt, 19-11, and Jeanette Lane, 16-14, made it two wins for the day. Rosie Geeves lost her match, 15-21.

South’s Senior Men completed a one rink, 20 shot win, 67-47, against North’s B side in the morning round, due to the excellent team effort from Shane Young’s rink of Michael Andersch, Glenn Frame and Chris Norris, winning their match by 32 shots, 38-6. Tony Vince, with his team of Scott Booth, Greg Fehlberg and Grant Allford, lost 13-17, and Grant Chamberlain’s rink of Kevin Raby, Steve Graf and Peter Marshall also lost, 16-24.

The afternoon round against North’s A side went down to the last bowls. With one end to play South held a one-shot lead, 51-50, and were several shots up in the head on Vince’s rink, with just the skips to play. David Minns, North’s skip, put the jack in the ditch with his first bowl to hold two shots, which Vince could not counter, and although the South won on two rinks it was a devastating loss to the North by one shot, 52-51. Young, 26-15, completed a winning double for the day, and Vince also won, 19-14. Chamberlain lost his match, 16-24. The final two rounds will be played in Burnie on February 28.
