Coaches to boost Tassie chances

- Adam Clifford

Tasmania’s under-16 hockey sides will benefit from being guided by state hockey royalty, with 2023 Tassie Tigers men’s coaching pair Stephen McMullen and Trent Sproule taking the junior reigns for their national championships in Hobart next week.

McMullen will take charge of a boys side that finished ninth 12 months ago but returns with many of the same players.

“We have a similar team to last year but feel we have learnt a lot from that experience and improved our structures, which puts us in a good position going in,” McMullen said.

“They are an exciting group with some quality up-andcoming stars of Tasmanian hockey in the group.

“We will be looking for a bit of luck during the event against the powerhouses of Queensland and NSW.

“But with a sound defence, fast forward lines and some exciting sets we can certainly be there when the whips are cracking.”

The team will be led by captain Angus McMullen and vice-captain Patrick Donegan but features stars from right across the state, which has limited their preparation to multiday camps.

Sproule will similarly lead the girls’ team that has maintained a strong core group from last year, while adding some talented youngsters that will bolster their depth.

“This younger group including Sadie Rogers and Abbey Sargent will bring speed talent and enthusiasm to the team,” Sproule said.

“I will be looking toward our leadership group of Rosie Salmon, Mollie Davey, Phoebe and Harriet Sproule to provide direction and composure to our younger group of players.

“Our aim is to continue our improvement from 2023.”

The tournament will run from April 4 until April 11 at the Tasmanian Hockey Centre.
