Sport’s role in saving lives
Sporting events are not just about competition and entertainment; they also hold tremendous potential to make a difference in the lives of those battling medical conditions like cancer. Bringing together athletes, fans and communities, they create a platform to raise awareness and funds for crucial research.
The visibility of sporting events is immense. Whether it’s a local charity run or a major tournament broadcast globally, they capture the attention of millions.
By aligning with such events, organisations can reach a vast audience, spreading awareness about the importance of medical research and the challenges faced by patients and their families.
In the case of Lauderdale Football Club’s Jemma Percey, it can be involvement through the result of becoming personally affected by her godmother’s diagnosis of breast cancer.
While her godmother overcame the disease, the experience compelled her to launch Pink Sports Day to raise funds for
Breast Cancer Network Australia.
“My godmother was diagnosed with breast cancer and, while her story was a good one as she overcame the disease, it started something within me,” Ms Percey said.
Sporting events have a unique ability to inspire and mobilise people. Athletes are often seen as role models, and their participation in fundraising efforts can encourage others to join the cause. From organising charity matches to donation drives, the sports community can leverage its influence to rally support for medical research.
On the national stage, Neale Daniher’s Freeze MND challenge – returning in June – has raised more than $97m in the hope of finding a cure.
Sporting events large and small have the power to transcend their primary purpose and become catalysts for change. By harnessing the passion and energy of the sports community, we can make meaningful strides towards combating medical conditions and improving healthcare for all.
