Com­ment on weighty is­sue

The Com­bat Sports Com­mis­sion is call­ing for pub­lic com­ment on the is­sue of ath­letes at­tempt­ing to lose weight by de­hy­drat­ing them­selves.

Ath­letes may use de­hy­dra­tion to gain ad­van­tage by qual­i­fy­ing for a weight class be­low their typ­i­cal divi­sion, ac­cord­ing to the WA Depart­ment of Pre­mier and Cabi­net.

Symp­toms in­clude mood swings, re­duced func­tions in the kid­ney, heart and car­dio­vas­cu­lar sys­tem and in­creased risk of brain in­jury.

The State has flagged that the prac­tice can be fa­tal.

The Con­tes­tant Safety Strat­egy to Ad­dress Rapid Weight Loss (Weight Cut­ting) by De­hy­dra­tion is open to pub­lic com­ment un­til Jan­uary 31.
