Comment on weighty issue
The Combat Sports Commission is calling for public comment on the issue of athletes attempting to lose weight by dehydrating themselves.
Athletes may use dehydration to gain advantage by qualifying for a weight class below their typical division, according to the WA Department of Premier and Cabinet.
Symptoms include mood swings, reduced functions in the kidney, heart and cardiovascular system and increased risk of brain injury.
The State has flagged that the practice can be fatal.
The Contestant Safety Strategy to Address Rapid Weight Loss (Weight Cutting) by Dehydration is open to public comment until January 31.
