HAWAI‘ I

Yes, it’s a tropical paradise of sparkling waters and sunshine, but the Hawaiian Islands of Maui, O‘ahu, Kaua‘ i and The Island of Hawai‘ i also offer so much more.

This tropical paradise has so much to offer.

Hawai‘i is home to one of the most diverse food scenes in America. Thanks to the cultural mix of migrants that have made these islands their home, Hawaiian food is deliciously influenced by Japanese, Portuguese, Filipino and Pacific Island cuisine. Hawai‘i’s beautiful weather also means that the growing season lasts all year long – providing an abundance of locally grown fruit and vegetables.

Visiting a farmers’ market, often referred to as ‘Sunshine Markets’, is a must when visiting Hawai‘i – and there are so many to choose from. Markets (and the organic produce they sell) abound, thanks to Hawai‘i’s incredibly fertile volcanic soil and glorious weather. Maui is famous for its Upcountry Farmer’s Market, where you can buy anything from locally grown coffee to husked coconuts. In O‘ahu you will find the popular KCC Farmers’ Market – the largest in the state, and you can’t travel far in Kaua‘i without passing a farmers’ market or fruit stand just bursting with produce.

To showcase Hawai‘i’s fabulous mix of ethnic flavours and fresh island ingredients, in 1991 twelve Hawai‘i chefs established Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine. Even today the 12 original award-winning chefs continue to dream up amazing dishes, taking advantage of the islands’ fresh ingredients and diverse flavours at their world-renowned restaurants.

Across Hawai‘i there are many foodie districts to explore – not just in the tourist areas, but in residential neighbourhoods as well. For example, a hop, skip and a jump from Waikīkī you’ll find some incredible culinary experiences including Chinatown, Kaka‘ako and the Fish Markets. Just give them a try – you won’t be disappointed.
