OUR WINNING POEM
Lisa says, “My poem was written as a response to the societal pressure on women to conform to unrealistic expectations about body size and beauty. It explores the common turns of phrase we use to portray these expectations. I want to raise awareness of the damage these can cause, and the triggers they can become, to people experiencing negative body image issues and eating disorders.” We applaud Lisa’s intent and framing of this issue, as the rise of eating disorders is of great concern. Her poem draws attention to the way we may all be guilty of judging others, thus unintentionally contributing to the problem.
