RODNEY HORIN Rod is managing director at Joseph Palmer & Sons (Vic). Rod says: “My late father used to say, ‘One needs to learn to save but also to learn to spend a little’, so I would put 60% into super, divide 30% among my three children to go towards their mortgages, give 5% to charity and spend the rest on a family holiday, with some left over for splurging.” NICOLA FIELD Nicola is a regular contributor. Nicola says: “I’d start by spending a few blissful days just admiring my bank balance. In the longer term, I’d drip-feed the cash into super, claiming the maximum before-tax contribution each year to grow my nest egg while also trimming my annual tax bill.” Money JOHN RAWLING John is an aged care consultant at Joseph Palmer & Sons (Vic), investment managers and aged care specialists. John says: “I would help both of my kids to buy their first property. It’s hard enough for graduates to get good jobs these days let alone save a deposit to buy their first home. It’s time to start helping the next generation.” MARTIN ROTH Martin is a financial writer, and was for many years a foreign correspondent based in Tokyo, and then a securities analyst. Martin says: “$1 million? Wow! After picking myself up from the floor I’d start wrestling with my conscience about how much to give away to help others. I hope I’d have the willpower to give away most of it.” SUSAN HELY Susan has been a senior writer at Money for more than 10 years. Susan says: “Invest in a welldiversified portfolio of income-producing A-REITs and shares via exchange traded funds so I would have a continuous income to go to my favourite music festivals, visit beautiful gardens and do some fun things with my grown-up kids.” JEREMY STRETEN Jeremy is director of Streten Masons Lawyers in Queensland. Jeremy says: “I wouldn’t waste it. I would use the money to leverage and invest in assets, most likely property that would produce a sufficient income to pay for itself. That way I would build my property portfolio and personal wealth.”
