Best-Value Green Cars

GOLD WINNER MAZDA 2 NEO AUTO

-

Electric cars are increasingly coming to the fore but their high purchase price represents a handicap in terms of overall value. That said, there is still a host of small petrol-driven cars that get you from A to B with the lowest possible emissions and fuel use while representing value in terms of price and running costs.

Our 2019 winners are a mix of three- and four-cylinder turbo and non-turbo petrol engine cars.

We set just two criteria: a sub-5.0L/100km ADR combined cycle fuel consumption (petrol or hybrid) and a five-star ANCAP safety rating. This leaves us with what the industry calls “light” cars – one size smaller than “small”.

Mazda’s recent adoption of a five-year warranty has cemented the value credentials of the Mazda 2 Neo hatch or sedan. An eager 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine delivers a decent 4.9L/100km economy on regular unleaded through the optional six-speed automatic. The Neo has a convenient 12-month service interval, and the annual insurance premium is just $597.

The Suzuki Swift GL uses its light weight to terrific effect, teaming this with a 1.2-litre petrol engine to deliver excellent 4.6L/100km economy. The Swift is one of the more affordable new cars on the market. It’s also less costly to run over three years but loses out to the Mazda 2 because of its lesser resale value and shorter warranty.

The Skoda Fabia 70 TSI is big on space and value, thanks to its characterful 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, which sips fuel at 4.5L/100km. It comes with a five-year warranty.
