9.6 km circuit, 4 hrs, Grade 3 moderate track

Monthly Chronicle - - Outdoor Lifestyle -

You will get a real sense of wilderness on this walk with wildflowers painting a colourful canvas even with the optional short side trip to a coffee stop half way. Five minutes into this loop walk you will not believe you are in the biggest city in Australia.

Start the walk from the carved sandstone Sphinx Memorial in the car park near the entrance to Bobbin Head National Park . Follow the track as it leads you down to Cowan Creek, and don't let the name fool you - it is a river! Explore the diverse environments as you wander through valleys, along a wide creek and back along the ridge top. Don't forget the optional side trip to the Empire Marina and cafe for a recharge with a coffee or lunch and toilets.

From the Marina you can wander a bit further to the playground, BBQ and another cafe at Bobbin Head picnic area, a marvellous Art Deco building. After your rest stop you climb up along a steep track with stunning views back over Bobbin Head to then follow the original Bobbin Head Road, long since closed to traffic. It is a bit of climb, so use the views as an excuse to rest. Part way back along this old road, keep your eye out for the Aboriginal engravings on the right-hand side.

The walks starts from the car park at the end of Sphinx Rd (off Bobbin Head Rd), North Turramurra. There is a national park entry fee for vehicles but if you walk in (less than 700m) from the bus stop (buses 577 and 594) outside Lady Davidson Hospital there is no entry fee.
