RACKING UP THE HITS: DANNY’S BEST VIDS
Topping the viewing numbers, Imaginate (2013) – where a young Danny’s imagination is brought to life on screen – has been watched 66 million times on YouTube. “Imaginate was a stress zone,” he admits. “It was like Groundhog Day – we’d lose track of time because we were in a dark room struggling with something that we’d also been struggling with the day before, and the day before that we’d been struggling with something else! But the e ort was definitely worth it.”
WayBackHome (2010) documents a trip from Edinburgh back to the Isle of Skye. Danny had high hopes for the big-budget follow-up to his first viral hit, and, proving that he wasn’t a one-hit wonder, it amassed 39 million views. “I need time away from my videos to appreciate them,” he says. “WayBack Home I was massively disappointed with [at the time], because my ambitions were way out there”.
Released last year, Danny’s latest film WeeDayOut (2016) is a masterpiece. “It came together exactly how I imagined it,” he says. “And knowing what song we wanted to use from the start made a big di erence, rather than stressing about that afterwards.” WeeDayOut has amassed eight million views in just seven months.
Danny’s first film, InspiredBicycles (2009), has now had 38 million views. “The biggest change came in 2009,” he says. “From that video on, everything was di erent. I always find it funny, how successful my films are, and everyone is always so positive. I feel lucky – it must be horrible if you’ve gone big for negative reasons or something embarrassing. It’s an overwhelming feeling.”
