WATERPROOF ZIP

Identified by rubberised strips that cover the teeth when closed, waterproof zips do away with the need for protective ‘storm flaps’, which add bulk.

ZIP GARAGE

A neat pocket of fabric that the zip pull goes into when fully fastened to stop it irritating or catching on your chin. You only notice how handy it is when you haven’t got one.

PIT ZIPS

Vertical zips that run under the armpits and down the side of the jacket and can be opened up for extra ventilation. Ease of use can vary, so check before buying.

VENTS

Long zips, usually placed diagonally on the front or side of the jacket, which can be opened to create airflow. Particularly useful on designs made from heavier/less breathable fabrics.

TWO-LAYER FABRIC

One where the waterproof coating has no internal backing. This makes for a lighter fabric, but can feel rubbery against the skin. Sometimes lined with mesh.

THREE-LAYER FABRIC

A material where the waterproof coating or membrane has a backing (identified by a smooth-knit inner surface to the jacket), increasing durability.
