By using one large outboard bearing, butted up against the crank arm, and small needle rollers at the end of a tapered axle, Specialized have managed to make super-slim pedals that feel very stable underfoot. The platform is on the narrow side though, and the bearing bulge can push your shoe out towards the edge of the pedal, especially if you have bigger feet. Hourglass-shaped pins provide good grip, and thread in from underneath. On flat pedals, we often like to remove the central pins to give more of a concave feel, but this isn’t possible on the Boomslangs, where two of the four middle pins secure a service hatch for the needle bearings. Four spare pins are screwed into the crank side of the pedal body, in case you lose some on the trail, which is a nice touch. The price is a little steep, compared to others here. www.specialized.com
