GET RAD ON A RESI RAMP

How to practise new tricks in safety

-

Resi ramps are the next step up from foam pits. They’ll take the sting out of a heavy landing, allowing you to ride away from a trick that you haven’t quite got dialled. While they’re softer than wood, they can definitely still hurt, so it’s wise to be more cautious than you would in a foam pit. Once you feel confident enough to land a trick, you can practise it on a resi ramp before taking it to a proper jump.

Use a steady run-up to give yourself confidence and control on take-off. Aim for height rather than distance so that you have time to attempt the trick and land comfortably at the top of the landing. In this instance, I’ve gone for a tyre grab, which is a trick that’s possible to progress to once you’re comfortable taking your hands off the bar.

To tyre grab, pop the take-off and keep the front wheel higher than the back. This will make it possible to reach forward and touch the front tyre on the way up to the highest point of the jump. Keep your weight over the front of the bike mid-jump so you maintain your balance, then adjust the angle of the bike to bring the front wheel back down for landing.

Use the ramp to practise your jumps over and over again. Anything you’ve wanted to improve in your style or trick bag, you can try it here and get it dialled. As always, some encouragement/heckling from riding buddies will help!
