PLATFORM SIZE

A bigger surface area means a larger contact patch and, in theory, more grip. But with extra size comes an increased likelihood of clipping a pedal. Smaller-footed riders should therefore consider using smaller pedals. Some brands, such as Crankbrothers, o er two sizes.

PLATFORM DEPTH

Thinner pedals place your foot closer to the centre of the axle, making for a more balanced feel. Ground clearance is improved too. Axle strength and bearing durability are limiting factors though. Smaller bearings wear out faster, which is why on many of the thinner pedals here, you’ll see an ‘outboard’ bearing next to the crank arm.

PIN TYPES

Most flat pedals have removable pins, except for some budget models. Look for pins that are accessed from underneath, which means you can easily replace any that snap or bend. (On pins that screw in from above, the heads are prone to filling with dirt or getting damaged.) Some pedals come with a choice of di erent length pins, so that you can fine tune the feel. Don’t feel obliged to use all the pins – experiment, and you may find you get better grip with a few left out.
