Nukeproof Horizon Pro Sam Hill £79.99

-

These Enduro World Series winning flats have been favourites in the MBUK office for the past couple of years, with good reason. The platform size treads the perfect line between support and rut-catching protuberance, and while they’re not the skinniest at 18mm, the concavity and pin height make them feel well balanced. Each pedal has 10 pins per side, and the six front and back ones screw in from underneath using a 2.5mm Allen key (the four central ones screw in from the top). Their height can be increased from 5mm to 6mm by removing the supplied washers, giving a rock-solid footing over even the biggest of bumps. On the Sam Hill signature model, the forged aluminium body has a machined surface, but if you’re happy to forgo the pro rider branding, then the standard version (in a choice of four colours) is identical in shape and £10 cheaper. Either way, the price isn’t bad – and if you’ve got an extra £95 to burn, then there’s the option of a titanium axle upgrade. The Horizons spin on a nylon DU bushing and two sealed bearings per pedal. We’ve found durability to be pretty good, but it could be improved by better sealing between the axle and pedal body. The standard rubber seal is quite loose and can shift away from the body, letting in water and grime. Even though they do get wobbly after time and aren’t the slimmest, the grip of the Nukeproof pedals is flawless and that’s what’s made them our go-to flats. www.hotlines-uk.com
