This beautiful snowy shot was taken on the shore of Loch Muick, on the Balmoral Estate in the Cairngorms. It was the accidental product of one those days when things just don’t go to plan. Snapper Russell Burton explains…

“We’d based ourselves in Ballater, with a plan to drive to the Spittal of Glen Muick and head from there up the Capel Road, with the single purpose of riding a loop that would take in the amazing Corrie Chash descent. We probably should have given up when we were forced to abandon the car and ride 14km to the start. Arriving there to find it snowed in and all the high routes e ectively closed was another clue. But we decided to ride the trail round the edge of the loch anyway.

“It was flat, it wasn’t the descent we’d come for, but it was stunning. It was also freezing, the light was fading and so were the riders. But the loch was mirror flat so, with no time to set up and no time for second chances, I shot it in one pass. The landscape did the rest.”
