Patagonia Capilene Air Hoody £140
Gulp. Yes, that’s £140 for a baselayer, albeit one with seamless 3D construction. You might be forgiven for not realising it’s a hoody because, worn down, the hood is close-fitting enough that it forms a high, cosy neck. Pulled up, you feel like you’re wearing something from The Incredibles, but also that you’re super-warm and protected. It’s been a life-saver in the unexpected early blizzards on high ground this winter. The warmth factor is high but the breathability so good too that we haven’t overheated and, despite wearing this for days (and some nights), it never smells. The 51 per cent merino/49 per cent recycled polyester fabric’s unusual texture means that although the fit is close, this manages to look and feel like a casual top. Yes, it’s very expensive, but we still want it very much. http://eu.patagonia.com
