IRAN AT A GLANCE
The Islamic Republic of Iran is the second-largest country in the Middle East, with a population of 83 million and an area of 1.6 million square kilometres. Formerly known as Persia, it’s home to one of the world’s oldest civilisations and has been a centre of Islamic culture and learning since the seventh century AD. The current republic, with its authoritarian government and autocratic Supreme Leader, was established in 1979 and has attracted widespread criticism for abuses against human rights and civil liberties. Its economy has been hit hard by international sanctions targeting its controversial nuclear programme. However, Iran is a diverse country, home to multiple ethnic groups and with terrain varying from rugged mountains to desert basins, large plains and even lush forests. Not only is there a small but fervent MTB scene, but Iran also has several ski resorts, and hiking, rock climbing and mountain climbing are popular, too.
