FSA Gradient BB392EVO Modular crankset £259.95
Designed for everything from trail riding to downhill, FSA aim to cover many bases with their Gradient cranks. At 699g (170mm arms, 32t chainring), they’re suitable for those after a more bombproof set-up. For trail use, they’re expensive and heavy compared to Shimano’s SLX cranks, and similar on the scales to SRAM’s NX. However, for DH duties they’re a fair chunk lighter than Shimano’s Saints. On the trail, they held up to everything we threw at them. They feel reassuringly sturdy underfoot, without transferring more-than-usual levels of feedback and vibration. We didn’t notice any unwanted flex or twisting – the 30mm spindle no doubt helps here – and feel confident in their ability to fend off a rock strike, or several. They’re made from aluminium, so there are no pedal inserts to worry about. Installation is straightforward, although you need a MegaExo bottom bracket tool for threaded BB shells, a 10mm Allen key (not found on all multi-tools) and a lot of torque. These cranks could serve you well if you’re a heavyweight rider or hard on your equipment and are after a tough set of cranks for gravity riding. For general trail duties, they’re overkill. Still, they do provide a way for downhillers to save some weight, and you can get them with 165mm arms, too. Luke www.windwave.co.uk
