Not many extreme sports athletes can claim to have been professional mountain bikers, motocross riders and snowboarders all at the same time, but then America’s Shaun Palmer never was one to follow convention. Bursting onto the Lycra-clad MTB scene of the mid ’90s sporting baggy moto kit and full tattoo sleeves, Palmer injected an overdose of attitude and raw speed into the world of DH. A guy who partied as hard as he raced – sometimes to the detriment of his results – we remember him as the dude who made downhill cool and stuck a middle finger up to the status-quo. His stars-and-stripes painted Intense M1 remains one of the gaudiest but raddest race bikes of all time.
