Mountain Biking UK

STAR LETTER

UPHILL STRUGGLE

-

I’ve been inspired to write in because I know that the past couple of years have been hard on many of us, and the onset of winter can make it tougher still. Ever since the first issue, I’ve been a huge fan of MBUK (yes, there are some of us still going!). Mountain biking has helped get me through some difficult times. I can’t overstate how significant being able to escape the day-to-day grind by getting outdoors on my bike with great friends, or out for a quick solo spin, has been for me.

Recently, my job contract wasn’t renewed after funding ran out. Without being able to ride, I’m not sure how I’d have been able to keep going while looking for work. It’s been tough, and I’ve been feeling pretty low. Reading a friend’s copy of MBUK each month has kept me going, helping to inspire me to get out there and keep plugging. Thank you so much, guys. The good news is that, after a nervy wait, I finally got a new job, starting next year!

Mountain biking has also helped me in an even bigger way. Eight years ago, having moved to a new area, I was trying to find new biking buddies and signed up for a weekend away with a local outdoor club. After a tiring week I came close to bailing on the trip, but persevered. And boy, am I glad I did! That weekend, while riding on Dartmoor, I met the woman who’d become my wife and is also my partner in mountain biking adventures. So, I’d like to say to those out there who might be struggling – keep going, hold on, get out on your bike and keep the faith. Mark Ferguson, via email

Thanks for the inspiring words, Mark. We’re happy to hear you’ve managed to push through such a rough patch, and that the mag has helped you on that journey. You’re right – our sport can be really helpful when it comes to holding yourself together in difficult times. Of course, the hardest part is finding the motivation to get out the door. Congratulations on the new job and your wedding. This selection of Lezyne kit should help you in the future – whatever it brings!
