TRAIL KIT ESSENTIALS

No one wants to end a ride early, so carrying the right gear to keep both you and your bike running can make all the difference

-

Tools

A basic on-bike toolkit includes a multi-tool, chain breaker, tubeless plugs, tyre levers and a pump (and maybe CO2 cannisters). If your wheels aren’t set up tubeless, pack a puncture kit. A selection of zipties and some duct or electrical tape will help you fix any number of mechanicals. Always check your tools work with your bike – for example, make sure Allen keys are long enough to reach the bolts and Torx keys are the correct size.

Spares

If you just want to keep the wheels rolling and aren’t going far, an inner tube is the only spare you need. For longer trips and/or if you want to be totally self-sufficient, pop in some quick-links (the same speed as your chain), a gear cable, some brake pads, a tyre boot, some spokes and a replacement mech hanger (these are usually bikespecific so not available in all bike shops).

Food & drink

On average you need to drink 0.5-1l of fluid per hour to stay hydrated when exercising (although obviously this increases depending on how hot it is), and it’s recommended you eat a small snack every 30 to 60 minutes to keep your blood sugar level consistent. How you fuel is up to you – whether it’s with a cheese-and-pickle sarnie, a flapjack, an energy gel or some high-tech powder you add to your water. The fun bit is experimenting and seeing what works for you!

Clothing

What you need to take depends on the weather forecast and how long you’re planning on being out for, but bear in mind how changeable the weather can be in the UK, and especially in the mountains. Layers are the key, and wearing breathable, sweat-wicking fabrics will help keep you drier when you’re riding. It’s easy to get cold when you stop so pack an extra baselayer or down jacket for pitstops, while a decent waterproof jacket is pretty much essential on these shores, and doubles as a windproof when you need to warm up.
