REFRESH YOUR HOPE UNION PEDALS

-

Launched last year, Hope’s Union clipless pedals are already proving popular. Stripping them down requires a few common tools – 6mm and 8mm Allen keys, some grease and a cloth, along with degreaser if the internals are filthy – plus a thin-walled 8mm socket, available from Hope.

Insert the thin-walled 8mm socket into the pedal body to undo the axle locking nut. You’ll need to have the 8mm Allen key installed in the other end of the axle to get enough leverage.

Remove the axle from the pedal body, sliding it out by hand. Pull the soft black rubber seal off the axle – what Hope call the ‘pedal face lip seal’ – and give that a clean, too.

Inspect the condition of the bearings and bushing inside the pedal body. These can be wiped with a cloth, or you may need a cleaning product to help de-gunk the insides. If the internals are damaged or worn out, purchase a Hope pedal service kit.

First, remove the pedal from the crankarm, using the 8mm Allen key. Then, holding the pedal firmly in your hand, use the 6mm Allen key to undo the axle end-cap, turning it anticlockwise.

Turn the 8mm socket anticlockwise to loosen and remove the locking nut. Clean the nut and end-cap and set them aside somewhere safe.

Wipe off any dirt and grease from the pedal axle with a cloth, using a cleaner or degreaser if necessary to remove any stubborn particles.

Ensure everything is dry, then grease the axle. If you used a cleaner/degreaser, apply some grease to the bearings and bushing, too. Reassemble the pedal, making sure to reinstall the seal on the axle before inserting it into the pedal body.
