Podium finishes for local secondary college athletes Young skiers shine at Victorian Cross Country Interschools
MANSFIELD Secondary College fielded a team of eight dedicated cross country skiers last Sunday at the State XC Championships.
Dan Walker, Div 1, who has participated in this event for the past nine years, was first out of the start gate in a time trial event and raced a gruelling 3km for a midfield result.
Ollie Walker, Div 2, was next away and performed well despite a huge crash, also finishing the 3km mid-field.
Div 2 skier Lulu McDonald was next away.
Lulu has trained diligently throughout the winter and was often seen first thing in the morning out on the XC trails.
Her hard work paid off and she performed brilliantly over the 3km to finish in 3rd place against some very tough competition.
Jamieson McNamara was next out of the start gate for his 2km race and looked strong on the course, coming away with a first half of the field result and narrowly missing a spot in the Nationals.
These four athletes all competed as individuals in their respective divisions.
The Div 3 girls were well represented with four competitors for their 2km race.
The results were outstanding: Bella Green 6th place, Elise Empey 9th place and Talia Appleton 14th place, giving these three an overall 3rd place as a team.
Alicia Fox also competed as an individual in Div 3 and ended up with a very respectable mid-field result.
Elise, Bella and Talia competed again in the afternoon in the relay skate event.
The girls were super quick and looked strong on the transitions to finish 4th overall and earn a place in the Nationals.
Lulu, Elise, Bella and Talia have all qualified for the Australian Interschools in both the individual and team XC events.
THE MANSFIELD BOYS: Jamieson McNamara, Ollie Walker and Dan Walker.
THE MANSFIELD GIRLS: Talia Appleton, Elise Empey and Bella Green.
BRONZE: Lulu McDonald performed brilliantly over 3km to finish in 3rd place.
