Eep risin August down, but 2018 up
visitor numbers for Buller for the season are up by more than 20,000 – with 296,320 visiting this year compared to 274,319 last year.
2018 has proven to be the busiest year in the last decade, with an increase of more than 35 per cent in total visitor numbers for the season so far.
The boom season on Buller, however, has been surpassed by that experienced on Mt Stirling – with a whopping 68 per cent increase in total visitor numbers.
In the week ending August 19, 1119 people headed to Stirling – slightly down on the same week last year but up by some 700 visitors in 2016.
Year to date figures show an increase of almost 3500 people visiting the cross country cousin of Buller.
Anecdotal evidence suggests a rise in the interest of snow shoeing has led to increased visitor numbers, as opposed to increased cross country skiing activity.
