visi­tor num­bers for Buller for the sea­son are up by more than 20,000 – with 296,320 visit­ing this year com­pared to 274,319 last year.

2018 has proven to be the busiest year in the last decade, with an in­crease of more than 35 per cent in to­tal visi­tor num­bers for the sea­son so far.

The boom sea­son on Buller, how­ever, has been sur­passed by that ex­pe­ri­enced on Mt Stir­ling – with a whop­ping 68 per cent in­crease in to­tal visi­tor num­bers.

In the week end­ing Au­gust 19, 1119 peo­ple headed to Stir­ling – slightly down on the same week last year but up by some 700 vis­i­tors in 2016.

Year to date fig­ures show an in­crease of al­most 3500 peo­ple visit­ing the cross coun­try cousin of Buller.

Anec­do­tal ev­i­dence sug­gests a rise in the in­ter­est of snow shoe­ing has led to in­creased visi­tor num­bers, as op­posed to in­creased cross coun­try ski­ing ac­tiv­ity.
