Loving the thrill of racing fast
Full name: Anthony Rule. Nickname: Ruley. Birthplace: Melbourne. Lives: Alexandra Headland. Occupation: Physiotherapist. Age and marital status: 32, married with a five-month-old daughter. Club: Noosa Tri Club. Sport: Triathlon. Favourite food: Pork ribs. Favourite drink: Sailor Jerry with ginger beer. Pet hates: Fish and chip shops that can’t cook good chips, people who don’t keep left when walking. Favourite run location: Noosa National Park. Favourite ride location: Redwoods mountain bike trails in Rotarua, by far the best trails I’ve ever ridden, smooth berms, perfect jumps and perfectly flowing lines. Favourite swim location: The pier, Kailua Kona. Best or most memorable event: 2010 Ironman NZ coming ninth. Bucket-list event: Baja 1000 (anyone who’s seen ‘dust to glory’ will know it). How did you get into this sport: Twofold, 1994 as a kid watching the Hawaiian Ironman and fast forward to 2000 and Peter Robertson who went to my high school going to the Olympics and then winning three Olympic distance world titles. Favourite race: The Great Train Race (13.2km race against a steam train in the Dandenong ranges in Victoria). What’s your favourite part of racing: Going fast and racing people. Current bike: Giant Trinity TT. Dream bike: Ducati Desmosedici. What does a training week look like for you in terms of
volume and disciplines and how are you preparations for worlds:
At the moment it doesn’t look ideal, three-four swims for 10-12km, four rides for about eight hours/250km and 60km of running.
I’m fairly underdone and a little time limited so my preparation has not been optimal, so I’ll rock up
about 80% fit and be a little bit off the pace. It wont stop me going hard but if all had been ideal I’d be hoping for 4:00-4:05 but this time it will probably be more in the 4:12-4:15 range. How do you manage to fit in training: Get up early, but we all do that. Half of my training doubles as my social life so runs are catching up with mates.
If you could have a celebrity live with you, who would it be and why: Travis Pastrana, because hopefully he’d bring at least a few of his toys. When you were little what job did you want to do: Drive Tonka trucks. Best movie: Pulp Fiction. Current car: Mazda3. Dream car: Corvette ZR1.
Triathlete Anthony Rule is currently preparing for the 70.3 world championship.
