Two years fly by for local festival
ON the eve of the second birthday of the Myrtleford Farmers Market, coordinator Franca Norris says its addition has benefited the whole Alpine Shire.
“It’s been phenomenal and we (the Alpine Shire) are becoming such a big food bowl, there is only about two Victorian Farmers’ Markets Association markets that have as many primary producers so we are so fortunate,” she said.
“We have had the opportunity to give our producers that real encouragement and chance to have people come from far and wide to try what they have to offer.
She said the response and feedback from local farmers over the two years had been extremely positive.
“They love it, they get a real buzz,” she said
“I love dealing with the farmers and getting people to come and love what they do, it’s a chance for people to come straight up to their farmers, have a relationship with them and miss that middle man.
“A local farmer bounces off people appreciating their food, having a chat and really taking an interest in their lifestyles.”
Ms Norris said credit had to go to TAFCO who had done “all the hard yards” in lifting the Farmers Market off the ground since its inception in 2016.
TAFCO secretary Kerry Murphy said the market was located perfectly in Myrtleford, attracting flow through traffic on the road to and from Bright and the ski resorts in winter.
She said it should only continue to go from strength to strength.
“We are always interested in new stall owners,” Ms Murphy said.
“We have strict rules in who can and can’t come but we certainly have a few spots, it’s an event that’s been very well supported by the community and tourists.
“It’s certainly attracting people to the town and making people stop as they pass through.”
This weekend the Myrtleford Playground and Toy Library will attend the market and put on breakfast with families and children encouraged to attend.
Ms Norris said there will also be baby goats there for the kids and that “Mr Mushroom” would be doing the food presentations.
“It will be a fairly big market even though it’s sort of the tail end of the winter, all of our stall holders are raring to go,” she said.
