Barbecue set to bring Happy Valley together

THE Happy Valley Community Hall that strengthened as a community hub after the 2009 bushfire disasters will receive $10,000 worth of funding for a permanent barbecue site from the Into Our Hands Foundation.

The barbecue and servery will be constructed near the outdoor eating shelter built with public donations after the 2009 fire, on the east side of the Happy Valley Hall.

Since 2009, the Hall’s committee of management have overseen improvements to their supper room, a new outdoor shelter, introduction of solar to the work shed’s roof and the development of a tree garden.

The large tree garden, which was developed after many hours of volunteer labour, has added to visitations and social community binding events for the hall, but lack of a permanent barbecue has been an issue after a prior port- able one was stolen.

The Hall’s President, Christine McCracken, said the Happy Valley community would become better connected with the infrastructure.

“There will increased opportunities for us to gather together in a relaxed atmosphere, with a lot less preparation,” she said.

“This includes running informative and practical workshops and creates scope for other groups to hire the Hall and get the chance to hold a barbecue to bond their groups further together.”

The CFA were also mentioned as a group that would benefit from the improvements.

“When the 2009 fires swept down from Beechworth, across Mudgegonga and then up

Happy Valley and beyond, the Community was stunned and inward at first, but then they

gathered together to help and heal,” Ms McCracken explained.

“The Happy Valley Hall was and still is a focal point for meetings and planning and through generous donations like this we can better support the grounds and grow our community spirit.”
