Bollywood on in Cafe series
THE Bright Art Gallery will host the final performance of the 2018 Café Culture Series on Saturday.
A colourful and exotic show, Bollywood travels through the progression of traditional, classical and contemporary Indian music and dance.
Parvyn Singh, lead singer of Melbourne’s original Bollywood outfit The Bombay Royale, has developed the show in conjunction with the four other members of the troupe.
Singh is both a dancer and singer and exudes a seemingly effortless grace and purity in her movement and voice.
She is joined by two other fabulous professional dancers and teachers, Ida Ghate and Shamita Sivabalan.
The three dancers come from disparate backgrounds in dance training, and are incorporating elements of hip hop, tap and ballet into the pieces.
Most of the dances have been choreographed specially for this show, with others composed by the greats of Indian classical dance and handed down from teacher to student over many generations.
The instrumental pieces each build in energy and tempo from gentle and stately to blisteringly fast and frenetic, ending in a giant crescendo. The first half ends with a segue into a modern interpretation of kathak to an Ed Sheeran cover while the show concludes with a high-energy Bollywood dance medley.
With the flamboyant costumes, impressive musicianship, energetic and graceful dancing Bollywood is set to entertain and surprise.
Meanwhile Bright Art Gallery’s summer exhibition is also ongoing and includes jewellery, paintings and photographs, ceramics, glass work, textile art, woodwork, metalwork, sculptures and much more.
Featuring local artists, it’s also a great opportunity to purchase a unique Christmas Gifts for family or friends.
The exhibition runs until January 28 and is open Thursday to Monday 10am to 4pm.
Tickets for Saturday’s performance of Bollywood are available by contacting Pauline or Steve McCall on 0429 127 444 or (03) 5750 1074.
The show will get underway at 8pm.
