Savoys bow out of FA Cup

MYRTLEFORD has gone down in the first round of the knockout Albury Wodonga Football Association Men’s FA Cup competition, beaten 0-2 by Wangaratta City last Wednesday evening.

The first half was dominated by Wangaratta, with goals coming in the 13th minute from Stoycho Ivanov and the 33rd from Adam Burchell.

The Savoys lifted in the second half, but it wasn’t enough to hit back against the more experienced Red Devils.

Coach Rob Caponecchia said while the competition was a good to showcase more soccer in the area, his focus is on the main division one season.

“With the injury list that we had, we’re focusing on the bigger picture at the moment,” he said.

“To be fair we didn’t play a lot of senior players, we played a lot of young guys, a few reserve guys stepped in.

“We had a look at a few different players to see how they went.

“In the second half I thought some of those young kids who were looking to step up to senior level really did step up and had a good game.

“We weren’t too concerned with the result; we like to win, but we knew there was a lot more game to play elsewhere.”

Wangaratta City play St Pat’s div two in the qualifying final.
