Disappointing loss for Saints netballers

- By NATHAN DE VRIES

MYRTLEFORD have one win from three matches in the O&M A grade competition after going down to Lavington 36-48 on Saturday night.

The Panthers opened the game strong, getting an eight goal lead after the first 15 minutes of the match, a margin that the Saints got down to seven by half-time.

Saints coach Tina Way said the message to her players was clear at the break.

“We had to maintain possession when we turn the ball over, and get it to the goal scorer to score goals,” she said,

“Once you turn the ball over we want to score from that, and maintain possession.”

Lavington started opening the gap back up in the third, scoring nine goals to the Saints’ five.

Myrtleford was unable to break through the Panthers’ defensive pressure by the end of the match, a pressure that Way said was applied all over the court.

“We had to change our normal approach to the game to try and combat that,” she said.

“Based on their stats from previous weeks, they shot very well on Saturday night; prior to that their stats haven’t been great but they were on song on Saturday night.

“Their defensive pressure was very good, they were very tall, they had a good reach and we did change our game plan and got within three goals in the second quarter.

“Then due to their defensive pressure they pushed it out to seven then 10 then 12.

“Grace McKerral had to change her whole normal game at the request of the coach which is hard to do but she did a very good job for the benefit of the side; we were just beaten on the night.”

The Saints face top of the table Yarrawonga in round 4, a match which is sure to test the Saints.

“We are without Rebecca Piazza this weekend against Yarrawonga, she’s not available which is a blow for us; Rhiannon McIlroy will come up to A grade this week,” said Way.
