The Upper Great Southern Hockey Association have taken out the Men’s State Country Division 1 Championship after a dramatic shootout against Geraldton. The final shootout tally was 4-2. UGSHA captain Sam Broad was delighted with the result and effort of his young side.
“We always know it’s going to be a good contest against the Geraldton boys,” he said.
“There’s a hype around Narrogin after the international games and we wanted to come down and back up our reputation and play well.
“It’s nice to do it for our supporters and all the people that come down as well as the coaches that have been coaching for 10 years.”
Geraldton opened the scoring within the first 10 minutes of the game and went into half-time with a 1-0 lead, despite UGSHA dominating the possession and play.
UGSHA weren’t rewarded until the final 10 minutes of play, when they found the net off the back of an impressive penalty corner, with Rhett Ballard opening the scoring for the side.
Only three minute later, Kendall Ballard found the corner of the goal off another UGSHA penalty corner.
However, with time running out and UGSHA looking to have done enough to earn the win, Geraldton’s Matt O’Neil scored a dramatic late equaliser to force the game to a shootout.
UGSHA scored the first three penalty attempts and Sam Broad nailed the final shot to seal the win for UGSHA.
