Lo­cal boy toasts Cup suc­cess

Nar­ro­gin’s David Phillips has tasted FHE Cup suc­cess, claim­ing top place in the boys divi­sion of the un­der-16 com­pe­ti­tion with the School Sport WA side.

Six­teen teams from across the Asia-Pa­cific re­gion faced off against each other at Perth Hockey Sta­dium be­gin­ning last Thurs­day be­fore fin­ish­ing up on Sun­day.

Split be­tween two pre­lim­i­nary pools of five, first and sec­ond placed teams in each pro­gressed to “Pool C” of the com­pe­ti­tion.

In Pool C, SSWA knocked off cup favourites Ja­pan 2-0, while also de­feat­ing ri­vals WA Grey 2-0. Ja­pan fin­ished sec­ond over­all. WA White, which in­cluded UGSHA play­ers Trent Gumprich and Ben Woodruff, placed sixth in the over­all stand­ings.

In “Pool D”, the fi­nal round for the bot­tom six ranked boys side, WA White de­feated South­ern River 1-0 and WA Re­gional Boys 2-0, but fell short against Malaysia’s Mata­dor team, 1-4.

Mata­dor were the even­tual win­ners of Pool D, and fin­ished fifth over­all.

The WA Re­gional Boys side, con­tain­ing lo­cals Eathan Blyth, Quin­lan Paice, Josh O’Brien and Ethan For­rest placed last over­all in the boys divi­sion.

The Re­gional Girls side also had a strong con­tin­gent of UGSHA play­ers.

Charlotte Tin­ley, Is­abelle Kil­patrick, Emma Phillips, Katie Phillips, Aimee Grzinic and Takayla Pense all lined up for the WA Re­gional Girls side.

Ja­pan won the girls divi­sion of the FHE Cup as WA Re­gional placed last in sixth, only man­ag­ing a 1-1 draw against WA White.
