The Up­per Great South­ern again punched well above its weight in sport­ing ac­co­lades for 2018. There were plenty of fairy­tales and heart­breaks made over the past 12 months. Here are the Nar­ro­gin Ob­server’s top five sport­ing mo­ments.

Kook­abur­ras come to Town

The Up­per Great South­ern Hockey As­so­ci­a­tion’s world-class fa­cil­i­ties drew two of the world’s best hockey sides to Nar­ro­gin in Jan­uary — the Kook­abur­ras and the Nether­lands.

A to­tal of 2900 peo­ple wit­nessed the two-match se­ries, which the Nether­lands ended up win­ning 1-0.

Bod­ding­ton mon­u­men­tal upset

Katan­ning Wan­der­ers’ un­de­feated sea­son in the Up­per Great South­ern Foot­ball League, which landed them on top of the lad­der with a per­cent­age of 601, came to a crash­ing end in Bod­ding­ton dur­ing the com­pe­ti­tion’s de­cider.

Har­ris El­lis and Mitchell Salmeri led the way for the home side in their 13.13 (91) to 12.11 (83) vic­tory.

The AFL even fea­tured the game in their 2018 AFL Record Grand Fi­nal edi­tion across six pages.

Pin­gelly have all the an­swers

Nar­ro­gin & Dis­tricts Net­ball Asso- cia­tion’s top di­vi­sion was dom­i­nated by the ladies from Pin­gelly.

Pin­gelly claimed the ti­tle 58-50 in a tense fi­nal against Wil­liams.

War­riors go four-in-a-row and back-to-back

The War­riors Women’s Hockey Club win their fourth UGSHA premier­ship in a row, beat­ing Robins 5-2.

War­riors Men’s Hockey Club claim their sec­ond premier­ship in a row, win­ning 4-3 over Riffs.

Blechyn­den makes WAFL colts team of the year

Pin­gelly prod­uct Tom Blechyn­den made the WAFL’s colts team of the year af­ter im­press­ing with South Fre­man­tle.

Blechyn­den av­er­aged 20.9 dis­pos­als a game in 2018 while play­ing on the Bull­dog’s half-back line, earn­ing him his back pocket spot in the team of the year.

War­riors Men’s Hockey Club claim their sec­ond premier­ship in a row, win­ning 4-3 over Riffs.

The War­riors Women’s Hockey Club win their fourth UGSHA premier­ship in a row, beat­ing Robins 5-2.
