Dan Mall shows us around his studio in Philadelphia, where he connects with his handpicked teams
Dan Mall gives a tour of his office in Philadelphia, which acts as the headquarters for SuperFriendly’s handpicked project teams
You’re looking at my desk at SFHQ (SuperFriendly headquarters), my design studio in Philadelphia. The workspace was built in an old church that we renovated when I left Big Spaceship in 2012 and my wife and I moved back from Brooklyn.
We’d both sort of grown up in Philly, and it was time to challenge ourselves in a different way. We figured that if we could best New York, we could make it anywhere. My family and I live upstairs, and the full studio is downstairs.
As the founder and sole employee of SuperFriendly, I use what I lovingly call ‘The SuperFriend Model’ to pull together bespoke teams of specialists for every project. I oversee all work to make sure every team is working to the highest quality.
This working model means I do a lot of video calls with my distributed teams. My Rode Podcaster (a USB broadcast microphone), and Ledu drafting lamp keep me looking bright and sounding clear for these.
For my design work, a key part of my setup is my Wacom Intuos Pro creative pen tablet . I’m useless without it.
My ‘What Color Is It?’ screensaver keeps my screen looking fresh. It takes whatever time it is in hours, minutes and seconds, translates that into a hex code and displays that colour. So at 15: 47: 04 it shows the colour #154704. The screensaver was created by Jonic Linley, based on a website by J.E. Murphy.
If I’m feeling uninspired, this digital frame from Electric Objects shows me new artwork whenever I want it. You can load it with more than 20,000 pictures.
This ‘Never Settle’ card by my SuperFriend Ugmonk (aka Jeff Sheldon) has been beautifully screenprinted in metallic gold ink on black cover stock. I keep it on my desk to remind me to keep pushing myself.
Most importantly, my wedding photo and Instagram Photos Calendar from Social Print Studio remind me what a fortunate life I’m blessed to live.
