WELCOME TO NEUE LUXURY
As an expression of character, belief, values and environment, the notion of identity is as complex, slippery and amorphous as luxury itself. Independent and yet interconnected, we each strive to discover, challenge or assert our identity through multilayered networks and unique rituals that engage and challenge ourselves and those around us. In doing so, we adorn ourselves with garments that provoke, hang art on our walls that stimulates while developing unique codes, signs and gestures that speak to the density of our collective and individual experiences.
As cultural and commercial agendas change, so do the values and characteristics of identity and what it represents to an individual, a culture and even a civilisation. Like luxury, our understanding of identity is impacted by the events of our past, the experiences of our present and the potential of our future. Our September issue explores the nuances and complexities of identity while highlighting the makers, artefacts and ideas that make it possible to change our view of the world.
It is in this spirit that we celebrate individual identity with perfumer Frédéric Malle (p.6) whilst contrasting his oeuvre against that of iconic French artist Pierre Soulages (p.4). We explore notions of the multiple and seriality through Prada Fondazione’s Serial and Portable Classic exhibitions (p.10) while juxtaposing the ideas and creative identity of Nicola Formichetti (p.14) against that of Monika Bielskyte (p.16). We reflect upon the notion of censorship and the subjugation of identity with Tony Garifalakis (p.18) and speak to Armand Hadida about the importance of shaping a unique identity within a homogeneous fashion landscape (p.20). Last and of course not least, we travel to Amsterdam to speak with creative iconoclast Viktor Horsting of Viktor&rolf, about the challenges and opportunities found at the nexus of art and fashion (p.2).
I invite you to take the time to discover our sixth issue. It marks the start of a significant chapter for Neue Luxury with the release of Neue Fashion: a quarterly supplement established in partnership with Harrolds Luxury Department Store. I trust that this issue lives up to our promise and continues to deliver upon our vision.
