More Australian women than ever before are working in paid employment and have the ability to meaningfully contribute to both the workforce and family life. This comes with enormous responsibility. Yet many women find it difficult to meet these expectations with little support. Phd/masters student Tiffany De Sousa Machado is investigating the social and mental implications of ‘having it all’ and how developing stronger community bonds between women can empower them to reach their potential. Tiffany’s commitment has earned her a 2017 Future Leader scholarship from Westpac Bicentennial Foundation to support her research in psychology on the role of women in society, including the health and wellbeing of families and communities. The Bicentennial Foundation invests in and unites outstanding people from all walks of life with ambition, ideas and drive to help Australia prosper and grow. It does this by awarding 100 scholarships a year, forever through a $100 million scholarship fund. The Foundation provides more than financial support; it also offers networking, leadership and mentoring opportunities. Scholarships are awarded across five categories to individuals who have the vision to shape a better future for all Australians. Categories include: Future Leaders, Social Change Fellowship, Research Fellowship, Asian Exchange and Young Technologists. To enquire or apply online, go to westpac.com.au/scholarships and start reshaping the future.

This scholarship gives me the opportunity to conduct hands-on research and attend conferences where I have the opportunity to connect with experts from around the world. – Tiffany De Sousa Machado
