Goldie Hawn I MISSED THE ATTENTION

Often the mother does not give herself the way she should and open the doorway into her heart. After 15 years, the star is back, making us laugh again

FAMILY TIES

Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer, co-stars of the new actioncomedy Snatched, are a match made in heaven... Scratch that, a match made on a plane!

‘Amy approached me on a plane but at the time I didn’t know her,’ Goldie recalls. ‘We met again in London with Kate [Hudson, Goldie’s daughter] and Amy came over and said: “I am doing this movie and I really want you to be in it!” I said: “Great, that is fantastic,” and it went from there.’

It’s 15 years since Goldie has graced the big screen, so when New Idea catches up with the Hollywood legend, she chats about her exciting silver screen return, the special bond between her and daughter Kate Hudson – and how she looks so good at 71!

What finally drew you back to movies? My foundation [The Hawn Foundation] has been going for 13 years now. It’s extremely successful, but I began to think: ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to go out and do something funny?’ And I kind of manifested that. What was it like getting back in front of the camera? It was like walking back into the house you grew up in. The experience of making a film wasn’t new and exciting, but Amy was new and exciting. I had forgotten how much fun it is making movies and how nice the attention is! People ask whether they can rub your back. They say: ‘Would you like tea? Can we fix your hair? Would you like something to eat?’ I had forgotten how privileged we are making movies. Building a business, no-one was asking me whether I wanted my back rubbed!

Tell us about Snatched... It is about a mother who is very cautious and afraid. She doesn’t want to go out, or go anywhere. Amy’s character Emily comes to her mother’s house and says: ‘You’re coming away with me!’

What’s Amy Schumer like? She’s a genius and sees everything, not just her own performance. She’s not funny all the time, she’s a serious thinker. She is smart, decisive and incredibly instinctive. She’s got great timing, she is so relatable and she has a poignancy, something you don’t often see in comics. She is like everybody else, but not like anyone else – that’s what’s so compelling and beguiling about her.

You and your daughter seem to get on fantastically well... Yes, Kate and I laugh so much together. Once we went to a yoga retreat and couldn’t stop laughing. A woman came up and said: ‘I cannot tell you how beautiful your relationship is. I don’t have that with my mum and I wish I did.’

What is at the heart of your relationship with your kids? It’s about laughter, shared secrets, philosophy, heart-tohearts, pain, loss, boyfriends.

What’s your secret to looking so good? It’s make-up, but thank you. I drink green juices, work out and eat smartly. Sometimes I fast two days a week. I get a lot of sleep. [My partner] Kurt will say: ‘Are you going to bed already?’ I like to be in bed by 10pm at the latest. Sleep makes a huge difference to how you feel and how you cope. In terms of looks, it is genetics. My children are blessed with those genes. Katie is going to look young all her life.

Are you interested in making more films? I learnt making Snatched that I missed it. The experience brought back a lot of good memories. It would be fun to do more films again!
