Josh and Nic’s MKR advantage
They’ve charmed the socks off the nation with their smoothtalking ways, but it seems Josh and Nic have been glossing over some very important information.
In their backstory, shown in this season’s first episode, the brothers admit they own and run a food truck and that their family owns a popular Italian restaurant in Sydney.
‘My dad has a restaurant and we have a food truck,’ Josh tells New Idea.
‘We do basic food, but when we were on the show it was time to take the cooking up a notch.’
Somehow, their extensive experience in the restaurant and food industry has been largely overlooked, and their family restaurant and food truck have hardly been discussed since.
A quick search on the official MKR Facebook page, however, reveals it’s a different story.
Fans of the show took to the site to share their outrage over the decision to allow the pair into the competition.
One user claimed Josh and Nic ‘shouldn’t be on the show’, while another said: ‘It’s wrong.’
‘If they have a food van, this makes them cooks and on a professional level. They should not be on this show full stop,’ a furious fan wrote.
While Josh and Nic have been upfront about their culinary
history, some viewers claimed the pair understated their advantage in the competition of ‘home cooks’.
While the boys hose down claims they spend a lot of time cooking in their businesses, Nic has admitted to partaking in a little bit of ‘sabotage’ when it comes to competing on MKR.
‘I think we did it [sabotage],’ he says cryptically. ‘I don’t know how to say it... we had to, kind of, play the game.’
Josh and Nic are quick to clarify their experience in the food industry, making it clear while they are involved in the family restaurant and own a food truck, they don’t actually cook for the businesses.
‘We just run it... [we’re] not cooking all the time,’ Josh says.
Regardless of their alleged advantage in the competition, there’s no doubt Josh and Nic are two of this year’s most popular contestants.
In fact, almost every member of Group One told New Idea they counted the lads as their closest friends.
Even Kim and Suong say the siblings won them over after a rough start in the Instant Restaurant rounds.
‘[Josh and Nic] didn’t like us in the beginning, but, in time, I think they got to appreciate us for who we are. I think they didn’t know what we were about and thought we were playing strategy.’
