Prince of hearts

- ANGELA MOLLARD

He was once the most popular royal, but Prince Harry has had a rough ride of late, thanks to the shenanigans around the announcement of Archie’s birth and christening, and criticism that he’s a hypocrite. Having lectured the public that we must make thoughtful decisions around the environment, his decision to take four private jet flights in a matter of weeks led to him being branded an eco-hypocrite. But he’s about to return to a role he relishes and a place he loves. Indeed, so strong is Harry’s connection to Africa and the work of his late mother that the upcoming visit could be a chance to rehabilitate his image. Each royal has a word that signifies their role. The Queen’s is ‘duty’, Prince William’s is ‘expectation’ and Kate signifies ‘loyalty’. If Harry has a word, I believe it would be ‘heart’. The upcoming tour with

Meghan and Archie will give him the opportunity to showcase his true purpose. Harry cares deeply about youth, mental health, sustainability, communities and the environment. Crucially, he will be returning to Angola, where his mother’s work with the Halo Trust in trying to rid the world of landmines is still emblematic of her influence.

Just being in the country alongside the people whose lives have been so visibly impacted by the weapons will prove that he is still his mother’s son.

However, rumours are already swirling that this trip could turn to disaster, with clashing schedules and diva demands.

Let’s hope Harry can turn things around on this trip. We saw his unchecked delight the morning after his son was born. We need more moments like that – occasions where his natural exuberance overrides his hyper-controlling attempts to micromanage his family’s image.

Maybe being in Africa with the son he adores will prompt him to once again act from the heart.
