WHAT WOULD DIANA HAVE THOUGHT?
As Megxit unfolded last week, one thought kept returning to me: “What would Princess Diana have made of it all?” Surely Harry’s mother would have been devastated to see him fall out with William, who for so long was his closest friend and confidant. And she’d be deeply saddened to see Harry so determined to distance himself from the Queen and the royal family just 20 months after his glorious wedding. Yes, Diana had her faults and caused her own problems for the House of Windsor. But she also said she didn’t want to destroy the monarchy because her own son would one day be king.
When asked during their 2017 engagement interview what Diana would have made of Meghan, Harry said: “Oh yes, they’d be thick as thieves, without question.
“I think she would be over the moon, jumping up and down, you know excited for me, but then, as I said, would probably be best friends with Meghan.”
Ironically it was advice from Diana, quoted by William, that started the fallout between the brothers. The older and perhaps wiser brother dated Kate Middleton for eight years before getting down on one knee. He had taken Diana’s advice when she told him not to marry in haste, recalling that when she married Prince Charles: “We hardly knew each other.”
When William told his brother not to rush into a romance with a woman he’d known only a few months, Harry felt slighted, and it’s been downhill ever since.
If Diana had been around to offer the same advice, maybe things would not have spun out of proportion.
