Households around the country have been blown away by the incredible builds on the second season of LEGO Masters, but how much do you actually know about the small building blocks? Here are five little known facts about LEGO…

LEGO was first developed in 1932 when Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Kristianse­n started making wooden toys. He named his company LEGO by combining the two Danish words ‘leg godt’, meaning ‘play well’.

Mathematic­ian Søren Eilers wrote a computer program to determine how many possible ways that six classic 2x4 LEGO bricks can be combined. The result was more than 915 million combinatio­ns!

If you built a column of about 40 billion LEGO bricks it would reach the moon.

The moulds used to produce LEGO elements are accurate to within 0.004mm – less than the width of a hair. This accuracy results in what’s called LEGO’S clutch power.

There are more than 3700 different types of LEGO elements. That includes all types of LEGO bricks and other parts.
