New Idea

Q My wife is suggesting that we get an investment property. I think that it’s a bad idea given the climate we are in right now. What is the best way to discuss this without causing a big argument? MARK, VIA EMAIL.

A This is a far too important decision to fight over. By all accounts this is a good time to buy a property. The coronavirus has hit the real estate market. Prices are down and the banks are making it easier to borrow. The problem is you think it is a bad idea to take on an investment property. You’ll need to sit down with your wife and explain why this is not the time to stretch your financial commitments. She needs to listen to your reasons for not going ahead with the investment. Let her put forward her reasons for why it is a good Idea. I suggest both of you meet with a financial adviser or your bank. Discuss the pros and cons. This your future and has to be approached with a clear head.

Q My husband and I have been together over 12 years. I want to throw out the idea of an open relationship but I don’t want him to think that I don’t love him any less. Is this a good idea and what would be the best way to bring this up with him? CHANTELLE, VIA EMAIL.

A I am not in a position to say if this is a good or bad idea but it has to be a mutual decision. Your husband may feel you are no longer happy in the marriage. He may also feel he is not willing to share you with another partner or partners. You need to think about the inherent problems in your relationship. If you think an open marriage is going to solve any physical or emotional problems which you might be experiencing, then you are barking up the wrong tree. There is a more serious conversation to be had with your husband.
